When it comes to deciphering the influences on young people and children, it’s easy to point fingers at the media. Music, movies, and video games often bear the brunt of the blame for various issues affecting the youth. But is this criticism wholly justified? Are these forms of entertainment and media really the root of the problem, or is there more to the story?

Let’s take a step back and consider the landscape. Music, movies, and video games are undeniably prevalent in the lives of many young people. They provide entertainment, a means of expression, and sometimes, an escape. Critics argue that the content within these mediums can be violent, explicit, or otherwise detrimental to the development of young minds. “These forms of media are like double-edged swords,” says child psychologist Dr. Emily Robertson. “They can offer positive experiences, but there’s also potential for negative influence if not moderated.”

And that’s where the crux of the matter lies: moderation. Who is responsible for ensuring that young people are consuming media in a healthy, balanced way? More often than not, the responsibility falls on the parents. Yet, there seems to be a reluctance to place any blame on parenting skills or the lack thereof.
