This is a flash fiction piece.

A couple is holding hands on a table. He’s wearing a black long sleeve shirt. She’s wearing a big beige sweater. Besides them are two coffee mugs. One is black and the other, white.

I was enthralled to know that she would be coming over. I felt my mouth start to water, my stomach clench and tighten, my toes tap nervously, and my mind wandered as I thought about what I might say to her.

I speculated if she would sit next to me or across from me. Would we make small talk at first? Or would we go right into a deep discussion? I hoped she would sit next to me because then our legs might touch when I leaned forward to pour tea into her cup.

This made me start wondering if she might like coffee or tea better. Still, then I realized that everyone has different tastes. It wouldn’t matter anyway since I could get her whatever color of drink she wanted.

This made me think about how our hands might touch when she reached for her cup. Would her skin feel warm and soft? How many times would our fingers accidentally graze each other’s as we reached for the sugar bowl? What are those little bumps on her skin called, anyway? I wondered if the ones on her wrist were the same ones on her hand’s back.

Would there be time to walk in the woods after we had finished eating lunch? That way, we could look at nature together. We could also talk freely, perhaps laughing at things only two people in love would find amusing. But would she always look at me like that, constantly smiling with an almost devious sparkle in her eyes?

What was she wearing today? Was it a skirt or pants? Was it dark blue or pale pink? Would the shirt match the skirt and pants, or would they contrast nicely? Also, how should she wear her hair today? In pigtails or maybe a bun? Oh, but possibly braids would be better! I hoped so because braids were absolutely adorable on women.

What sport was she playing now? Basketball or softball or maybe soccer! Yes, it was definitely soccer because girls tended to have amazing calves, and soccer required intense calf muscle exercise! The butterflies in my stomach fluttered around excitedly about our first date.
