Language, the very cornerstone of human interaction and the glue that holds societies together, has been continuously evolving throughout history. From the earliest grunts and gestures to the complex systems of communication we use today, language remains an ever-changing and fascinating subject. The world is home to an estimated 7,139 languages, according to Ethnologue, a comprehensive database of world languages. While millions speak some of these languages of people, others are used by only a handful of individuals. For example, Mandarin Chinese, the most widely spoken language, boasts over 1 billion speakers, while the Yuchi language, native to the southeastern United States, is spoken by fewer than ten people. As populations grow and new communities form, it is likely that the number of languages will continue to rise.
