In a world that often seems to reward the extroverted, shy children can face a unique set of challenges as they navigate through life. While shyness is common among children, parents, and educators must recognize and address its potential long-term consequences.

Shy children are at greater risk of being bullied (1), feeling insecure, having bouts of chronic sadness, giving in to peer pressure, and experiencing anxiety. As they grow into adults, they may struggle with insecurity and social withdrawal, leading to alcohol dependence or abuse (2) and less success in their careers and relationships (3).

(1) According to a study published in the Journal of School Violence, shy children are more likely to be targeted by bullies, with 48% of shy children reporting being bullied compared to 30% of non-shy children.

(2) A study in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology found that individuals who were shy as children were more likely to develop alcohol use disorders as adults.
