Unfortunately, while positive self-talk can improve performance, motivation, and confidence, negative self-talk can damage our mental health and well-being. In this blog post, we’ll explore the impact of self-talk on our daily lives and share strategies for cultivating a more supportive inner dialogue.

As Ole, Brinthaupt, Dier, and Polak (2020) highlighted, self-talk serves numerous essential functions, such as emotional regulation, coping, perspective-taking, and problem-solving. However, due to the brain’s negativity bias, we tend to focus more on adverse events and experiences, which can lead to a critical and fear-based internal monologue. This cognitive distortion may result in self-sabotage, imposter syndrome, social isolation, and other challenges.
